Bécancour

History of Bécancour

Bécancour facility commenced its operations as a producer of silicon metal and ferrosilicon in 1976 under the legal name of SKW Canada. From 1999 through 2010, the entity became Bécancour Silicon Inc. (Timminco Limited’s wholly owned subsidiary). On October 1st 2010, Timminco Limited has agreed to a joint venture transaction with Dow Corning Corporation. On June 14th 2012, Timminco Limited has sold their ownership interest in this business to Globe Specialty Metals. As a result, Globe Specialty Metals has acquired 51% equity interest in Quebec Silicon Limited Partnership and Dow Corning has retained 49% equity stake. 

Plant facilities

  • Two 24 MW furnaces and one 32 MW Furnace equipped with composite electrodes
  • Two crushing-screening lines for metallurgical and chemical Silicon
  • One crusher dust collector
  • One main silo for bulk and bags of fluffy silica fume. The main silo also transfers product to other silos which pelletize, densify and compact product

Location

The plant is situated in the industrial Parc of Bécancour (Province of Quebec, Canada) connected to rail and with direct access to deep water port.

It is at approximately 160km northeast of Montreal and about half ways between Montreal and Quebec City on the south shore of the St. Lawrence River facing Trois-Rivieres.

The closest airports are located in Montreal (Pierre-Elliot Trudeau International Airport) and Quebec city (Jean Lesage International Airport).
